Does Hospice do anything to make death come sooner?

  • Hospice neither hastens nor postpones dying.
  • Hospice emphasizes quality, rather than length of life.
  • Hospice provides its presence and specialized knowledge during the last months of life to make the patient and family as physically and emotionally comfortable as possible.
What is Hospice's success rate in battling pain?
  • Very high.
  • By using the appropriate combination of medications, counseling and therapies,most patients can attain a level of comfort that is acceptable to them.
Will medications prevent the patient from being able to talk or know what is happening around them?
  • The answer to this question is usually no.
  • The goal is to have the patient as alert and comfortable as possible.
  • By constantly consulting with the patient, hospices have been very successful in achieving this goal.
How difficult is caring for a dying loved one at home?
  • It is never easy and sometimes can be quite hard.
  • At the end of a prolonged, progressive illness, nights expecially can be very long, lonely and scary.
  • Hospice have staff available around the clock to consult with the family by phone or make emergency visits as appropriate.
  • Hospice has trained volunteers that provide "respite care" to give family members relief and/or provide companionship to the patient.
